Geording Partners with National Research Institute to Develop High-Efficiency Solar Panel Recycling Technology

As the volume of discarded solar panels continues to increase each year, the challenge of effectively recovering valuable materials—without compromising their structural integrity—has become a critical issue in the recycling industry. Conventional crushing methods are inadequate for solar panels, which are composed of multiple heterogeneous layers. These methods not only diminish the material's potential for reuse but also generate secondary pollution that is difficult to manage.

Material Integrity Matters: Precision Disassembly Overcomes the Recycling Bottleneck

A typical solar panel is composed of approximately 75% glass, along with aluminum frames, silicon wafers, EVA encapsulants, backsheet layers, and copper wires—all of which hold significant recycling value. When panels are crushed using traditional methods, these components are often damaged or mixed together, reducing the purity of the output and undermining the value of subsequent reuse.

The core technical challenge lies in separating the encapsulant and backsheet without damaging the silicon wafers or metal components. To tackle this, Geording Machinery partnered with a national research institute to develop specialized equipment designed for high-precision delamination. After multiple rounds of testing and process refinement, the team successfully created a system that cleanly separates glass from plastics while effectively recovering aluminum, copper, and high-purity silicon—unlocking greater value from recovered materials.

This collaboration demonstrates Geording’s expertise in processing complex composites. In addition to improving recovery yield, the solution significantly reduces energy consumption and material loss during processing, helping to minimize both emissions and environmental risks.
